Acne and hormones? Women, who suffer from acne, often blame their hormones for the breakouts they have.
And they are right! But it is more complex than just to blame male hormones (testosterone).
There are actually 3 hormones, that when imbalanced, cause acne.
It is mainly testosterone (more specifically its metabolite dihydrotestosterone), insulin and cortisol that influence the sebum production and inflammatory response in the skin. Hormonal acne is therefore nothing you have to put up with. It also does not have to mean something is wrong with your female cycle. The conversion of male hormones into its skin effective metabolite, as well as insulin imbalances, can be influenced by the food that you eat. I talk more about this in the video.
We are also able to control our production of the stress hormone cortisol. It is our own subjective reaction to life, work, relationships etc. that creates our individual stress response. Nowadays stress has become pervasive and takes a physical toll on our bodies as well.
So the good news is that we have the ability to regain hormonal balance through nutritional and lifestyle changes.
