First let me make a confession: I love coffee! Even if I could live without it, I would miss it.
There is a lot of research around the health benefits of coffee and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease is one of them. But what, when it comes to skin health and especially acne? Does coffee trigger acne?
Spoiler alert: it can trigger acne!
There are two aspects to consider, if we evaluate coffee:
- Caffeine
Caffeine is the reason we drink coffee, because it wakes us up and gives us an energy boost. This is caused by the stress reaction of the body to caffeine: activation of the sympathetic nervous system and the release of the stress hormone cortisol. Unfortunately this is the reason how coffee triggers inflammation and impaired wound healing in our skin.
- Acidity
Coffee, as well as malt/barley coffee or decaf, is an acidic drink due to the roasting process. An overly acidic diet leads to inflammation in the body and therefore in the skin as well.
In the video I give you my tips for healthy alternatives and what to do if you don’t want to skip coffee 100%.
